If you love history just like us, or if you simply want to experience the valley’s beautiful landscapes, traditional villages and monuments, award-winning wineries, and taste the amazing local food and wine, this is the tour for you! Our Cultural tour will take you on a journey though the historic villages of Garganta, Sabrosa, Provesende and Pinhão. The tour begins by travelling back in time to the Neolithic where you’ll visit the oldest Dolmen in the region. Near the village of Garganta we will visit a small museum where you can learn a bit more about the ancient local history and the reconstruction of the Castro, a fortified settlement from the Iron Age that you will later visit.

Continuing our tour to Sabrosa we’ll stop at São Martinho de Anta and visit Espaço Miguel Torga by Eduardo Souto Moura, 2011 Pritzker award winner. While roaming through this beautiful town we will visit the Castro of Sabrosa. Next, we’ll go for a short walk in the center of Sabrosa where we’ll stop by Ferdinand Magellan’s house and talk about the first circumnavigation of the globe. Lunch will be served at a traditional restaurant, followed by a visit to one of the best wineries in the area for a wine tasting with your sommelier, all inclusive of your tour.

Next on our journey, Provesende, a stunning historic village of the Douro, where we will talk about the portuguese “pelourinhos” and about the man who saved the region from phylloxera while observing one of the most impressive viewpoints of the Douro Valley. Along the beautiful scenery we will continue to Pinhão, nestled in the heart of the wine country, where we will stop at the train station to marvel the famous Portuguese tiles depicting the local landscapes and traditional activities of the region, and the incredibly steep vineyards around us.

We will end the day at arguably the best port wine tasting winery, one of Douro’s most renowned estates, sitting by the margins of the river where you will learn about the port-making process, see the port casks, and sample some fascinating Ports by the sunset.
